The North Dallas Texas Democratic Women co-hosted the 7th Biennial Democratic Primary Candidate Forum on January 31st. Over 150 people attended to hear representatives from the Presidential Campaign and candidates for a Congressional race, a Texas Legislature race, County Tax Assessor/Collector, County Commissioner and two Judicial races. A special highlight was having Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa to start the event off. He did not dwell on our losses in 2014 but gave hope to look forward. One of the major themes of his presentation was a hopeful trend of Hispanics who are openly upset about Donald Trump’s candidacy and his open hostility towards their community. Hinojosa said that we need to encourage a three pronged approach in activating registration and turn out of this very large demographic group … Get Mad, Get Scared and Get Proud.
Get Mad, at the current wave of anti-Hispanic rhetoric from the Republicans. Get Scared at what the effect of having one of these Republican’s elected as President. Get Proud that there is a better than 50% chance that no matter which Democrat is nominated; Julian Castro could get the Vice Presidential nomination. He is not Cuban or born out of the US to a parent who is a citizen, he is a home grown success story who is currently the secretary of housing and urban development, HUD, and a true rising star whom Texas Hispanics can identify with and get behind in the 2016 election. The large crowd was on its feet when the Chairman finished.
Current NDTDW President, Lenna Webb and President of the Far North Dallas Richardson Democrats and immediate Past President of NDTDW, Carol Jablonski were the moderators of the event. At the end, Lenna presented a beautiful vase of flowers to thank her for the exceptionally hard work she put into the event but to also acknowledge her birthday which was that day.
