The Legislature has wrapped up its regular session and there were some positive results. Sen. Wendy Davis helped guide the Texas Lily Ledbetter Act through the legislature where it passed both chambers. Some funding was restored to education. However, Gov. Perry still refuses to accept the Medicaid expansion money from the federal government and continues to ignore the poor in Texas to gain political points. Some funds were added to the Women’s Health Program, but the assault on women’s health, especially Planned Parenthood continues. School vouchers were defeated but they managed to demonize the CSCOPE curriculum that many Texas school districts use.
The Governor did call a special session to adopt the interim maps used in the last election as permanent. Many of the districts in the interim maps were gerrymandered to exclude or dilute minority voters. It is as important now to keep watching the legislature and contacting your local representatives. There are some great sites like the Texas Tribune, Empower the vote, and Texas Freedom Network that provide daily updates on legislative activities. Information is power.
