Rosh Hashanah is one of my favorite holidays. It is a festive celebration of the Jewish New Year, but most importantly it is a chance to evaluate the past year and make goals for the next. Where do I want to be next year? What do I want to accomplish?
This year I had two primary goals. I wanted to expand our organization with new chapters, building an Army of women, ready to elect our next Democratic President. I also wanted to encourage our members to run for office and take up leadership positions in their communities. In my opinion, there can be no real change until more Democratic women are sitting in the Legislature, County Commissions, Courthouse, and School Board seats.
I am happy to report that our members are stepping up to make that happen. Laura Irvin is running for Texas House District 102, Nancy Bean is running for Texas House District 93, Dr. Shirley McKellar is running for Congress against Louie Gohmert, and Barbara Gardner will be running for Judge on the 1st Court of Appeals. K.J. Lowry of Wise County will be running for School Board, from Highland Lakes, Mary Ann Raesner is running for re-election as Mayor of Meadowlakes and Christi Clement will continue as Director of Perdenales Electric Co-op, after having won a hard fought re-election campaign.
I thought about my message and where I wanted to be next year. I cannot preach about running for office if I am unwilling to do it myself, so I will be running for the Killeen ISD Board this May. I look forward to this challenge and believe I can make a difference. I believe we have even more members who can make a difference and I am asking you to take that leap and run for office. Texas needs you!
If you would like to lead in Texas Democratic Women, we need women with great ideas on our board. The most important is Treasurer. We have been so lucky to have outstanding treasurers who are wonderful about mentoring their successor. If you are interested in running for the board, just email Versalean Logans at email@example.com with the name of the office you wish to run for.
I look forward to a busy fall and watching TDW members step up to make Texas a better place to live.
