A Word from Your President-Elect
Immediately upon my election as your 2013 President-Elect, I was given a timeline and a “to-do” list for TDW’s 2014 convention. Plus, I inherited a minimum of 5 large plastic crates of papers and past TDW convention programs. After securing the hotel and our room rates for the convention, the next task at hand was deciding upon a theme for our convention.
As I began my contemplations, I looked back at past convention themes, reread the ‘History of TDW” which was written by two of our founders – Anne Mauzy and Jo Ann Jenkins and began to think about TDW’s future. I realized that the theme of our convention was a daunting task which should not be taken lightly or flippantly. The theme should encompass who we are, what we have accomplished and what we hope for the future. Wanting to build upon that foundation I sought advice from past TDW presidents and experts in the field of journalism thus the theme – TDW Pride, Power and Purpose was chosen.
The theme has three components and I believe is self-explanatory but please allow me to expound on each of the components.
Pride. We should be proud of ourselves as women, as Democrats and as Texas Democratic Women. The mantra, “You’ve Come a Long Way Baby,” is true but we have still got a long way to go – this past Texas legislative session and special sessions truly exemplified how much farther women in Texas have to go to be treated equally and fairly.
Power. We know men in Texas government have the power but there are more women than men and united we can change the political climate in Texas. Our single donations to a candidate might not make a difference but when we combine all those donations into one check that makes a very significant impact and a very LOUD voice for women and the issues we support.
I was one of “unruly mob” in the Senate gallery on the night of June 25, 2013 as the chants of “Let Her Speak” grew louder and the clock ticked closer to midnight, a state DPS trooper was standing beside me as the Senate gallery usher came to him and shouted, “Get them out, get them out now.” The DPS trooper replied, “Where do suggest we take them? Have you looked outside the gallery doors – it is not safe out there.”
Yes, there is power when we are united in solidarity!
Purpose. The purpose of TDW is to promote the increased political activity and influence of Democratic women in Texas politics and government. With your participation and assistance we can accomplish our purpose.
Come to our 2014 convention. I have attempted to develop an agenda with opportunities for everyone to get involved – plus the opportunity to spend money at the silent auction and at the vendor’s booths. We will have training events on both Friday and Saturday afternoons, our annual business meeting with election and installation of our 2014 officers, Star Awards Luncheon with Wendy Davis’ Deputy Campaign Director, Terrysa Guerra as our featured speaker, a pink sneaker parade, the 2014 Democratic Candidates Forum, opportunities to network with women from across our great state in the hospitality suite as well as at Esther’s Follies, then in conclusion, we will have the Gala Reception and Awards Dinner as we honor our award recipients and then as we are addressed by our keynote speaker, U.S. Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham.
This is an exciting time for Democrats in Texas and we have the potential to have a history-making impact. Please make your plans to join us in Austin for the 2014 TDW convention if you are unable to attend please consider making a donation or sponsoring a table.
Hopefully, I will see you in Austin on February 21 and 22.
With Pride, Power and Purpose,
TDW President-Elect and 2014 Convention Chair
