Happy 2016! What an exciting year this is going to be. We have the possibility of a woman at the top of the Democratic ticket and we have had some of our own members step forward to run at every level of government; from congress to the state legislature to their local city council. We have our annual convention coming up at the beginning of February and it is packed with great workshops, a candidate forum, and our Star Award luncheon with speaker Mary Beth Rogers, author of the book “Paint It Blue” currently featured on the cover of the January Texas Observer. We will also be honoring Sen. Sylvia Garcia with the Mae Jackson Female Elected Official and Rep. Chris Turner, the recipient of our Oscar Mauzy Humanitarian award. Add to that the networking and fun of the music, dancing and socializing among friends and other women that share our views and dream of turning Texas blue and it is going to be a can’t miss event. If you haven’t registered yet, simply go to our website, www.tdw.org and sign up today. It is going to be a great way to kick of election season.
This, sadly for me, will be my last column as President. It has been an honor to serve as President. It is a job I highly recommend. As President I wanted to encourage more of our members to run for office. We have some great leaders in this group and Texas needs great leaders. As a 24 year military spouse I have learned that it is not enough to talk the talk, but you have to walk the walk. One has to lead by example, so to that end, I will be filing this week to run for the Killeen School Board. Public education has always been an important Democratic value and I hope to strengthen that by serving our local school district. I want to challenge our members to help turn Texas blue, one city council, school board, county commission, and legislative seat at a time.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the mentors and supporters I have had along the way. The Past President’s who took time for my questions and guided me as President, Tammie Hartgroves, Donna Beth McCormick and Alieca Hux. The amazing board members and committee chairs that make me look good, Susan Shelton, Leah Payne, Cindy James, Vera Roberts, Carol Jablonski, Barbara Gardner, Mary Terry, Rosalie Weisfeld, Sharon Davis, Gloria Caceres, Versalean Logans, Ann Price, and Judy Baker. I must thank Lize Burr and Genevieve Van Cleve for their advice and friendship throughout this journey from Chapter President to TDW President. Last, but certainly not least, the women and men of Bell County TDW. Your support and friendship has been humbling. You give so freely of your time and ideas. You all taught me how to be a “Texas Democratic Woman” and I cannot thank you enough.
Thank you all for your dedication to this organization and your wonderful ideas. I am so excited to see all the wonderful things Susan and the 2016 board will do. I cannot wait to see you all in February!
