Dear Fellow TDW members,
There is an old saying that says “when it rains, it pours.” Well Texas has certainly experienced that literally and I have experienced it metaphorically. From a last minute cancellation by our venue for the Summer Retreat to my Dad being in very poor health, it has been raining a lot.
However, like most things the rain moves on and the sun comes out. We were able to secure an even better venue provided to us at a discounted price by two good Democrats. We have an excellent agenda in the works. My daughter graduated from college and I am sure my father is going to feel 100 times better after his bypass surgery.
The legislative session has officially ended. The best way to describe it is, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. That shouldn’t be an acceptable “win” for us. It is time for the sun to shine on regular Texans who everyday get up, go to work only to find that they are barely making ends meet. Now is the time for Democratic Women to step up and run for these offices in the Texas Legislature. If you have ever considered running, now should be the time that you are laying the groundwork and making the plans. Annie’s List has an excellent training for anyone thinking of running. If you are a chapter president, having your chapter offer a scholarship for interested women to take the training is an excellent way to train women to win.
I would like to take this time to recognize Judy Baker. She was just elected 3rd Vice President of the National Federation of Democratic Women. We have a Texan 3 seats away from the NFDW presidency. Thank you to the wonderful Emma Allen, who represented TDW so well at the National Convention in New Jersey. These ladies are helping to put Texas on the map nationally.
I would also like to note the recent death of one of TDW’s strongest activists, Liz McGinty. Liz recently stepped down from the Presidency of Caldwell County TDW in January. She finally got to go on her long awaited trip to Ireland/Scotland. Unfortunately, she fell ill while there and passed away. Her leadership and passion is what helps make TDW the organization it is.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Summer Retreat. It is going to be fun and informative and a great time to catch up with friends and fellow TDW members. There will be an executive board meeting immediately following the retreat. All members are welcome to stay and watch the proceedings.
See you in Salado!
