Minutes – May 23, 2016



 Board members present: Laura Nicol, Kathy Stabe, and Edna Griggs

President Laura Nicol called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Candidates present were: Robert Johnson for the Harris County 177th Criminal District Court; Chip Wells for the 507th Family Court; Jermaine Tanner for the 507th Family Court; and Bill McLeod for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 5, Place 1. Elected officials present were: Senfronia Thompson.

The minutes from the April 25, 2016 meeting were read and unanimously approved.

The President made announcements regarding the upcoming ROAD Women annual Heart of the City Brunch; and declared that Texas Democratic Women-Harris County Metro would not be holding meetings during the months of June, July, and August. In lieu of the monthly meetings, special events and outings would be planned.

The topic for the May speakers was human trafficking. Speakers were: Celena Vinson, Assistant Harris County Attorney and Coordinator of Nuisance Abatement Program, who spoke about how the Harris County Attorney’s office and the City of Houston are using civil lawsuits to shut down illicit businesses which harbor or profit from human trafficking victims; and Kathryn Griffin Grinan, who runs the largest re-entry services organization, in conjunction with Houston law enforcement, to rehabilitate prostitutes and help them leave lives of addiction and dependence on abusive pimps.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:12 p.m.
