MINUTES OF APRIL 24, 2017 MEETING
TEXAS DEMOCRATIC WOMEN OF HARRIS COUNTY METRO
Board members present: Laura Nicol, Kathy Stabe, Edna Griggs, Lenora Sorola-Pohlman, and Katie Leininger.
President Laura Nicol called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m.
Reading of the minutes from the March 2017 meeting was waived and the minutes were accepted as written.
Lauren Summerville spoke briefly about Pantsuit Republic: Houston and invited meeting attendees interested in participating in a group with a focus on activism, such as the Ted Cruz is Missing Town Hall held on April 15, 2017, to join one of their ten action committees.
Harris County Democratic Party Chair Lillie Schecter announced an open house being held by the Harris County Democratic Party on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 1-3 p.m.
In advance of the election on May 6, 2017, HISD Trustees Jolanda Jones and Anna Eastman presented the pros and cons of Proposition 1 regarding how to pay HISD’s recapture obligation to the State of Texas.
The April speaker was Dr. Cedric Dark of Policy Prescriptions, who provided a detailed review of the differences between the Affordable Care Act and the American Health Care Act proposed by Republicans. Dr. Dark announced a Health Policy Symposium being held on May 19, 2017 at Baylor College of Medicine.
An announcement was made regarding a TDW Harris happy hour being held on May 9, 2017 at Liberty Station. In celebration of Mother’s Day in May, TDW Harris will provide cards, envelopes, and stamps for those who come to the event to send notes of acknowledgment and gratitude to the women in politics and public service who forged paths, broke glass ceilings, inspired, and motivated us – our “political foremothers.”
