Local Elections & How to Become a Candidate
with Rhonda Skillern-Jones & Diane Trautman
Ms. Skillern-Jones and Dr. Trautman will speak about the upcoming school board elections, and how local Democrats can get their names on the ballot and run for some of these open positions.
Rhonda Skillern-Jones is the District II representative on the HISD Board of Trustees. She is currently serving her second consecutive term as an HISD Board member. She has held several leadership positions on the Board, including Secretary, Vice President, and President. She also represents HISD on the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors. Ms. Skillern-Jones has received numerous achievement awards and honors in recognition of her community and district efforts to enhance the lives of Houston children and citizens. She has a passion for education and children, and served HISD for 20 years in a volunteer capacity before joining the school board.
Dr. Diane Trautman is a former teacher, principal, and professor of education; and now holds the office of At Large member of the Harris County Board of Education. The seven-member Board decides how Harris County’s tax dollars are spent on programs provided by the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE). HCDE supports the educational needs of 25 school districts in Harris County, including HISD. Dr. Trautman earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Sam Houston State University, where she helped to develop a new leadership theory as part of her doctoral dissertation, for which she received the NCPEA Dissertation of the Year award in 2001.
ANNOUNCEMENT: TDWHarris will hold its elections for officers for 2017 at this meeting on January 23rd. Any member in good standing, who has paid their 2017 dues and has a minimum of six months experience as a member of TDWHarris may run for office, but you must be present at this meeting to vote, nominate a candidate, or be elected.
SNEAK PEAK: TDWHarris’s February meeting will take place on February 27, 2017. Our speakers will discuss the changes to the criminal justice system in Harris County following the inauguration of many newly elected Democrats to law enforcement, judicial, and prosecutorial positions in Harris County.
Our meetings are on 4th Mondays, 7-8 PM. Doors open at 6:30 PM for sign-in, snacks, and socializing.
