It’s not over. I know that.
I usually spend election night in tears, and it’s usually because voter turn out is so low in Texas, my candidates lose, and I’m bracing myself for the slog that awaits me toward November (or worse, January when the TXLege returns).
Tonight, I’m overwhelmed because we are, for the first time, going to nominate a woman as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States. It’s really happening. These are happy tears.
I’m also shedding tears in solidarity with my friends who support Senator Sanders. I’ve been where you are often, and I remember all too well the sting and frustration. Please stay involved. This is a long game. Stay with me. I need you to stand with me. I can’t do this alone. Texas is too big to carry by myself.
I wish Ann Richards could have seen this. I wish Barbara Jordan could have seen this. I wish Annie Webb Blanton could have seen this. I wish my Great Aunt Mary, who was a suffragette, who turned 18 the year women won the right to vote, and who never missed an election, could see this.
It’s not over. The polls just closed in California, and Washington DC votes next week. We still have the DNC to get through in Philly. And when we’re done with that, it’s on to November. When that’s over, it’s time for May 2017, November 2017, then March 2018, May 2018, November 2018, and so on for the rest of my life.
IT NEVER STOPS. We can never slack off. We can never let someone else decide for us. It’s up to us, NOW, and ALWAYS, to keep moving forward, to keep our eyes on the next election, and the one after that.
Because Texas deserves better than Ted Cruz for a US Senator, and deserves better than Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Ken Paxton, Sid Miller, George P. Bush, Glen Hegar, and so on, and so forth.
Don’t write Texas off. Don’t count me out. We are strong, and we are STRONGER TOGETHER. Texas is worth fighting for, and I’m ready.

The Bell County Texas Democratic Women recently awarded their annual scholarships to five outstanding Bell County students. Pictured above left to right is Bianca Nickleberry, Killeen H.S., and Sydney Jarvis, Salado H.S. The women were awarded the Richard E Morgan and the Elizabeth Morgan Memorial scholarships. Scholarship winners who are not pictured include La-Kara Nairn, Ellison H.S., recipient of the Chaz Garrett Spirit of Life scholarship, Jenny Williams, Killeen H.S. recipient of one of two Bell County TDW Women Helping Women Scholarships and Sophia Shedore, Belton H.S., also a recipient of one of the Bell County TDW Women Helping Women Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarships were determined by grades, extracurricular activities, leadership, and an essay. Congratulations to all of the recipients!
May is here, and that means we’re just one month away from the National Federation of Democratic Women’s convention in Charleston, SC, and the Texas Democratic Party Convention in San Antonio, TX. Click Here for more information about the NFDW meeting (June 9-12). I’ll be attending, along with Judy Baker, who currently serves as the 3rd Vice President of NFDW.
At the Texas Democratic Party convention (June 16-18), we have the Women’s Caucus on Friday (schedule is still TBD), and TDW helps produce the Ladybird Breakfast on Saturday morning at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. We’d love your help decorating the ballroom the night before the breakfast. We’re also having our booth at the convention again, so if you’re interested in taking a shift at the table and serving as an ambassador to our state organization and local chapters, please let us know! Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer. You do not have to be a delegate to the convention to help staff the TDW booth or decorate the ballroom, but if you want to attend the Women’s Caucus, you’ll need to be a delegate or have a guest pass to the convention.
Visit http://texasdemocraticconvention.com/ for details on the TDP Convention.
The May municipal elections on the 7th are behind us, and while we wish we had seen some different results (and higher turnout!), I’m very pleased to see how local chapters rallied around their local members when they became candidates. Local elections are where we build and fill our pipeline to Democratic leadership across the state, and I thank everyone who has offered to serve their community by running for office.
The next election on deck is the Primary Runoff. Mark your calendars for these Primary Runoff dates:
- Monday, May 16: First day of Early Vote
- Friday, May 13: Last day to apply for ballot by mail (received)
- Friday, May 20: Last day of Early Vote
- Tuesday, May 24: Runoff Election Day & Last day ballots by mail can be received
Don’t forget, the TDW Summer Retreat is on August 6, 2016. Hosted by the Greater Arlington Mansfield Democratic Women and the Tarrant County Democratic Women’s Club, we’ll be gathering for informative workshops and networking with strong Democratic women from all over the state. More details will follow, but be sure to save the date!
We are always Stronger Together,
The Tarrant County Democratic Woman’s Club held their annual Spring Fundraiser April 30, 2016 in Fort Worth, TX. A (sold out) room full of women (and one brave gentleman) enjoyed a delicious luncheon, a delightful talk on tabletop etiquette and a feminine themed silent auction.
Of course, there were the hats! Beautiful, elegant, casual or inventive, all were a joy to behold! By popular vote, Vicki Moorewas the winner of the “Most Creative” award and Emma Preciado’s beautiful blue hat was voted “Most Beautiful”. Our thanks to Tommy’s Burgers on Forest Park for the gift cards which were awarded to the two winners.
This is the second year for this event and a great time was had by all. This year the money raised for the tea is going to candidate donations. Our thanks to the wonderful caterer, all of the attendees and the organizing committee for making this a great success.
