Well, the race for President is clearly underway. The Republicans just had their first debate and if anyone had any doubts which direction they want to take the country, I think it was quite clear in their responses. I kept wondering over and over what they meant by restoring the U.S. to greatness. The economy is doing well, we have health care, the Supreme Court recognized that all Americans are created equal and should be treated that way, and we don’t have large numbers of combat troops deployed. What exactly do they want to change? Of course, we know their aim is to limit the rights of the marginal members of our society, to ignore the Constitution and try to regulate women and their choices, and hand out tax cuts to all their big donor friends.
Now is the time for Democrats to organize and register voters. To get our message out and recruit quality, Democratic female candidates willing to stand up for women, whether it is on the city council, county commission, state legislature or congress. Every seat counts!
Right now, let’s look at places around Texas where TDW might not have a presence and help start a chapter there. Every county has a few Democratic women and as we all know, Democratic female candidates look to organizations like Texas Democratic Women for support, both financially andfor volunteers. It is the starting point for many campaigns, so I am asking you, if you know of a county or have a friend in a county without a chapter, put them in contact with us either through email or our website, tdw.org. We can make this year the year of the Texas woman, but we need everyone’s help.
Finally, on a personal note, I would like to thank the Bell County Texas Democratic Women and the members of TDW who surprised me with a 50th birthday party the first night of the retreat. I have never had a surprise party before and to walk in and be surround by my Democratic family and friends was perfection. To celebrate with such smart, dynamic, fun and giving women (and men) has given me a memory I will forever cherish, so thank you for making the big 5-0 so memorable. It was a blast.
President, Texas Democratic Women
