On April 9th, hundreds of women gathered in Austin, and about 200 more visited district offices to lobby the elected officials on education, women’s health, and fair pay. It was called “Blue Ribbon Lobby Day” – the first one that we have ever had, but plan on repeating during the 2015 legislative session. A few women had this vision and made it come to pass in less than two months. Most of the women are active TDW members in cooperation with other women’s groups across the state. Those leaders can give a full report and the website, BlueRibbonLobbyDay.com will continue to be.
One of the highlights of the event was when 6 of us were recognized on the Senate floor with a resolution by Senator Judith Zaffirini with comments from Senators Wendy Davis, Sylvia Garcia, Leticia Van Putte (who happened to be presiding in her role as President Pro Tem.) Many other Senators spoke on the resolution and many came by to shake our hands and speak to us, including the Lt. Governor and Republicans. The issues we were talking about were not just partisan issues, they are all citizen issues. I was not on the House side, but there was some equal recognition lead by Representative Jessica Farrar and others.
This one day in Austin and the publicity we have received has sparked an interest in TDW. Robertson County is ready to get on board and we will be meeting with Rockwall County in June. It is a new day in TDW and with everybody’s help we will Turn Texas Blue.
